Talking to Residents (Castle Ward) Bedford

L&B Cordinator Philippa, joins Lucy and Ben in the Community.

Lucy and Ben twice weekly join residents in the community to discuss any arising issues.  They find this to work better than the weekly surgeries that were in progress before the pandemic.

Lucy manages the Friday 3.30 pm in the east of the ward and Ben manages the Saturday 3.30 pm sessions in the west of the ward.

On Friday 17 September The Coordinator for Luton and Bedfordshire Green Party, Philippa Fleming joined Lucy & Ben in the community to meet some of the residents they help.

Philippa says, it was very interesting meeting residents and hearing how Lucy and Ben help out in the area.  Philippa accompanied Lucy to begin with to get an idea of what was required and then attempted a solo chat with a resident, who sounded really clued up on environmental issues.  But she clearly required some help from Lucy who came along and showed her how to engage the residents who were keen to make suggestions for the area.  When we got chatting about this person being a business owner in the town, I think it was clear to both of us that we were not expecting the answer we got.  Because this person owns a restaurant that is notorius for serving meat dishes.  Philippa looked at  Lucy and said “really sorry Lucy but it’s my favourite restaurant”. We had a bit of a laugh and moved on to the next resident.  Once we had completed the chosen area, we decided to have a drink at the Gordon Arms which had not long reopened after a refurbishment. We enjoyed some social and relaxation time to reflect on the outcomes of the afternoon.

So yes learning a new job role within the Green Party can be daunting at first but i do hope that i can join again in the future and encourage others to help out when they can.

If you would like to volunteer to help Lucy & Ben with any of their work then please see this post from our spring newsletter for contact details.  Alternatively you can fill in the Volunteer Sign Up Form. Thank you.
