Bedford’s First Critical Mass Cycle Ride

Bedford's First Critical Mass Cycle Ride

Bedford Green Party are organising the town’s first ‘Critical Mass’ cycle ride THIS SATURDAY at 12 noon (socially distanced) to promote better cycling infrastructure in the town and the fact that every cycle on the road is one less car – making for less congestion, fewer climate wrecking emissions, improved health and better air quality. Bedford could be a cycling town and we assert our right to be there! The more cyclists there are, the safer we will be.
JOIN US for a friendly cycle route around the town this Saturday, meet to set off at 12 noon from the Embankment (across the road from the Embankment pub). We’ll set off together, at a steady pace, taking the lane. Our route will be east along the Embankment, left into Bushmead Avenue, along Bushmead and left at the junction onto Goldington Road, over the junction into St Peter Street, turning left at the lights to go south along the High Street. Finally before the river to return to the Embankment, finishing in Russell Park.
Please wear masks. Wear a hi-vis if you can, or bright colours. Confident cycling children are very welcome but under 14s should be accompanied by an adult. We want everyone to be safe but have fun. Please cycle together on the road, not the pavement. Be courteous to other road users on the route.
Cycling should not be an afterthought in planning. Government announcements around cycling this week are promising but the FUNDING for councils needs to be there. And with the upcoming deadline for the second tranche of council funding from the Government’s active travel grant, we really need Bedford Borough’s application to be ambitious to get a fair share of that cash and help towards the radical modal shift needed. In the first tranche of funding, the Council only got about £30k for temporary changes to encourage active travel (walking and cycling), and was fourth bottom out of councils who applied.
